Guru Dileepji Maharaj – Guruji – World Yoga, United Nations

In the lush surroundings of Tripunithura in Kerala, India, a boy named Dileepkumar Thankappan was born into a world where his parents’ marriage was looked down upon because they came from different religions. Despite this, they taught him valuable lessons of love and acceptance, shaping the young boy who would grow up to be known as Avadhuta H.H. Jagat Guru Dileepji Maharaj, or simply “Guruji.”

His mother, Devaki, was his first teacher, introducing him to yoga and the spiritual wisdom that had been passed down through their family. His father, Dr. Thomas Thankappan, also played a crucial role in his early education, particularly during difficult times that the family faced because of society’s disapproval.

One dramatic event in his childhood was a fire at their home. Guruji was nearly trapped, but his sister saved him at the last moment. This incident left a deep impact on him, fueling his thoughts about life’s unpredictability and the importance of community support.

Guruji’s quest for deeper understanding took him to the Himalayas and various spiritual masters who enriched his knowledge and strengthened his resolve to promote peace and spiritual unity worldwide. He eventually brought his teachings to an international stage, setting up organizations like the International Gurukulam and the World Yoga Community Inc., which reached out to diverse groups in New York City from public school kids to United Nations diplomats.

His efforts have not only showcased the power of interfaith harmony but also highlighted how one can overcome adversity through steadfast faith and love. Guruji’s life story shows that from small beginnings can come great wisdom and the ability to inspire peace around the world.

Guruji’s philosophy of “Simple Living and High Thinking” continues to guide his actions and inspire those around him, proving that real change begins within each of us.
